Oh, Those Childhood Days

It only stands to reason that the broken man you see
Today was damaged in those years which you recall
As innocent and sweet. I, too, have anecdotal memories
Of Easter candy, Halloween, and Christmas presents,
Recess play at school, but they are interspersed with
Pets which died, with pervert babysitters, kicks
Delivered by my dad, and hours overhearing my
Mom whine to others on the phone, humiliation
In a classroom, and reminders, ever after, of that
Moment. You know kids. In short, I don't look
Back with fondness at my dreary childhood. I haven't
Pleasant recollections of the life that I've lived since.
The days go by. At best, they're harmless. Mostly,
I am grateful that they're gone and can't return.
