In the Supermarket

They make awkward conversation.  “How's
Your father?”  “How's your job?”  “You're
Looking good.  Did you lose weight?”
It's not so strange to find him here, she
Thinks.  She'd heard he'd bought a condo
In a nearby neighborhood.  He glances
At her shopping cart.  There's little in it,
Frozen dinners, coffee creamer, three bananas,
Jalapeno flavored chips.  He guesses she's
Still by herself, but hasn't any plans to ask.
He's carrying a bag of apples, impulse
Shopping, she suspects.  She's sure he
Would have let it slip if he was seeing
Someone now.  She hasn't any plans to ask.
There soon is nothing more to say, except
Two tepid “nice to see yous.”  Afterward,
He wonders if she misses his warmth
In her bed.  Though she is not completely
Sure, she'd bet he wanted sex.
