The Bachelor's Case

He used to always fall in love,
it was his fallacy and weakness,
but it was always in sincerity and good faith
and used to follow the procedure up
with a proposal, which however always was turned down.
This was the age of sexual liberation
when everyone felt free to go to bed with anyone
without restrictions, qualms or conscientious scruples,
while he had been brought up a catholic of some decorum;
so he didn't fit into this brave new world of libertarianism
but was left out in something of a puzzlement
why people generally preferred indecency to decency
and felt anachronistic enough for some withdrawal into isolation,
while he never could abandon his ideals
but stuck to them like to some love of immortality,
not minding being generally considered a pathetic case;
but he would rather stick to his ideals
than risk forsaking them for any commonplace vulgarity.
