Some thoughts on the different seasons of our lives.

Autumn Leaves

My favorite activity in autumn is driving up Interstate 40 from North Carolina into Tennessee--destination, Gatlinburg.
As the mountains become higher, the shades of the various trees paint a picture of changing colors, from green to yellow to orange to brilliant red.
My tensions start to melt away as I absorb the beauty of God's handiwork and marvel at the miracle of nature in all life.
The sight of the autumn leaves subtly remind me that I am now in the autumn of my life. At 65, my life is very different than it was at 25, 35, 45, or 55.
Just as the oaks and maples put out new leaves in the spring, mature and grow during the summer, change colors and shed leaves in the autumn and look dead and dry in the winter, so our lives go through similiar seasons.
In the spring of our lives, we're young, tender, enthusiastic, naive.
In the summer, we have maturity confidence, strength.
In the autumn, we are slowly changing, with more inner beauty, with the wisdom of age and experience. We have produced our leaves, the legacy of children and grandchildren.
In the winter of our lives, we are falling away and slowly dying.
Working on a Family Tree, I'm aware of not only my roots, but the branches and leaves that make up who I am.
My parents and grandparents helped to mold my personality and disposition. My love of books, music and nature, my loyalty to family and friends, and my awareness of an Almighty Creator all came from them.
My siblings have shown me different ways of life as they have grown up and gone into different occupations and life styles.
My child has filled me with wonder as she became her own person, not just a carbon copy of me.
And now, in the autumn of my life, I can look at the leaves of my life, children, grandchildren, neices and nephews whose lives I've touched and swell with pride, just as the maple tree bursts with brillant red leaves.
As I approach the winter season of my life as a widow, I'm alone, but not lonely. My memories of all the seasons of my life bring me comfort, and I can look forward to a place where the autumn leaves never die and fall to the ground.
