The Spirit of the River

Arcane and slow the Great Mayan river flows,
Through long-deserted valleys and grassland low,
Through fields of plenty and past mountains high,
Pierced by rocks where the ancient rapids lie.

Flowing and unlocking the secrets of the mystic land,
Telling stories of the creators Gukumatz and Huracan,
Whispering their names in the misty morning haze,
Through the river the archaic gods gaze.

The river meanders like a snake through the sacred soil,
It's coarse forever changing as it twists and coils,
An enduring part of the enigmatic American panorama,
A tale of the land full of history, poetry and drama.
