The transit of Venus

How can you focus with tears in your eyes?
Too many lenses spoil the vernal vision,
Hay fever, perhaps, flayed nostrils, red lids,
Or the effect of salt water from an empty conch,
Bathing the eyes after the disappearance
Of the Morning Star.
