Unnatural
One time, the hometown hero lost. The tortoise couldn't catch the hare,
And Laura Esterhazy, who had been
The hero's girl since about the seventh
Grade, abandoned him. Imagine that!
He was the strongest boy at school,
A quarterback, a catalog of everything
A girl, even one so full of smarts and
Fight as Laura Esterhazy, should have
Wanted. We knew what they'd do: she
And he would have their wedding shortly
After graduation. He would find a decent
Job in town, and she would raise some
Kids who would be like their parents,
Strong and smart, but, no, she went
To college. Soon, she found a city boy
Who said she ought to study law, as he
Always had planned to do. She did,
And she became a lawyer off in Cincinnati.
She is rich, but isn't married, and she hasn't
Any kids. She comes back from time to
Time to visit. Her old boyfriend's
Working in the lumberyard, and hides
From her. The rest of us will say hello,
And watch her. We don't understand.
How could the hometown hero lose?
How can the hare say she is happy
When she's far away from both the
Tortoise and her home?
