Twenty Years Later

I know you've given thought to this.
The evening's done. We're all alone
Upon your porch, and it's too early,
This time, to invite me in,
So should we kiss?
We didn't long ago,
But things are different now.
Your mother who was here has gone,
And you, who were the local beauty,
Wouldn't, couldn't trust my words.
I told you how I loved you
For the woman I had seen inside,
But you had heard such claims before
So many times, and learned that those
Who spoke them hadn't looked within.
Their eyes had settled on your surface.
"Love" was merely lust,
But how we both have changed.
The lines have crept across your face.
Your own eyes have gotten dull.
Your hair is gray, and all of those
Who merely lusted, only quickly glance
Before they look away.
I'm saying I have seen inside again.
Will you believe me now?
I'll stay so long as you will let me,
Listless (though not without lust),
And I assure you I'll return,
And all I ask before I do
Is that you tell me what you're thinking.
Do I get a kiss?
