The Monster in the Hague
We made him evil once he'd finished.Earlier, we'd been afraid, and long ago,
We must admit, we told him what
We hoped he'd do. He did it, and we
Changed our minds. The fear, I guess;
It's hard to say, and, when we put him
In his cage, he looked at us with
Disbelief and sorrow, not with spite
Or hate, and pleaded, “All I did was
What you told me was my job.”
