Apologies to Sam

The Rime of the Ancient Bachelor

I've searched all my life
For the love of a lifetime.
Guess what I never could find.
My friends make excuses,
But I think the truth is
I've always been out of my mind.

Those vain younger women,
Whose shapes so entice me,
Accept all my gifts with disdain.
They turn up their noses
At dinners and roses,
Transforming my lust into pain.

Their elders are wounded
And wary of suitors.
They shudder whenever we touch.
Each previous lover,
I always discover,
Has hurt them a little too much.

So, here I am, shaven,
And set to go searching
The bars for a goddess again.
I'll flirt, then be candid,
Come home empty-handed,
And promise I'll give up, but when?
