Nasty, Brutish and Short, and Delirious
Should we go on as if we are what we've believedWe are: such noble creatures, hardly live,
Preoccupied with lofty thoughts, of, really,
Almost godly thoughts, of rights and dignities
And such, unconcerned with baser matters
Vexing lesser beings' minds? How can we
Be free and equal? How can we assure that we,
As one, respond to each one's voice, and how,
Though we cannot define it, know that justice
Has been done? Or should we see that we must
Eat; we want to reproduce, and, toward those
Ends, we'd rather not be equal? No, these
Most ungodly goals require that we clamber
Over others, that we must prevail, and what
We have believed we are enables us to tell
Ourselves it's justice when we do.
