Who? Us?

The torturer will tell himself,
Must tell himself, that what he
Does is necessary. He will know
That he defends the greater
Good. The leaders who have
Ordered him to do such things
Will tell themselves that lives
Of others were at risk (and,
Anyway, their hands were clean).
The families of the torturers
Will tell themselves they do
Not know exactly what their
Fathers or their husbands
Or their brothers did, and
All the nation will agree,
And should their cause
Be lost, and others call them
To account, they'll know they're
Victims of vindictive victors'
Justice, nothing more, and
There's no reason to believe
That evil has been done.
