Updraft
Nature's making fun of us. I watchedTwo hawks go by in spirals high above
The riverbed, a boy and girl, I believed,
In love the way we were as kids. We,
Too, would spiral, I would say. Then,
Suddenly, an eagle came. It split
The hawks, sent one away, as your
So-gallant captain did. You built
Your nest with him, and I flew off
To find another mate, and did, and
We've remained apart. My mate
Has gone. Your captain, fledged to
Colonel, fell while in Iraq. We find
Each other near again, and older,
Almost sure to wobble, I suggest
We test the air, and try to spiral,
As we did, above the riverbed.
