Democracy in the Twenty-first Century

Don't bore me with recitations of "rights."
What good does it do to say someone's
Entitled to speak his mind, to chose his
Leaders, to be tried for crimes by a gang
Of his peers, when the powers that be
See no point in such things? What are
Rights are not rights, except when they're
Granted, and, given the fact that such
People as us, wealthy enough to know
What we could lose, the withdrawal of
One, of any's okay. We'll be fine with
Our houses, our other possessions. We
Won't say a word. We'll acknowledge,
Though never aloud, that we'd rather
Not rule ourselves. Others can lead us,
And we will complain, and whatever we
Said (or someone else wrote) about
Popular sovereignty, we understand
Following's come to seem right.
