Destiny Defied at the Edge of the Tasman Sea

The curse of life is, as the Buddha
(Almost) said: dissatisfaction.
We must piss, and we must eat,
And we must search for mates,
With whom we can continue
What it is we are, the wormy
DNA. It wants to keep on
Replicating, and it doesn't
Care what happens to its
Bearers, you and me. If we
Should die, well, that's all right.
The worm will worm its way
Across this planet/host apart
From us until its ever-awful
Efforts turn the planet poisonous.
At that point, all the DNA will
Die, and I'm okay with that.
It's not as if I'll live to see
The death of life, the planet
Turning deadly warm, as
Venus is. Besides, I'm fairly
Happy here, having pissed,
And having eaten, watching
Sunlight flashing on the water,
With you, at the ocean's edge.
I do not feel dissatisfaction.
I defy my DNA, and dazzled by
The ocean's waves, and lips and
Limbs not altogether bent on
Serving replication, I must tell
You I'm in love, whatever that
May mean.
