The Survival of Life as We Know it Hangs in the Balance
I stand beside a window, watchingTimered sprinklers run, trapped
Within the heart of whiteness.
Here's another nigger joke,
And there's a woman, home
From work, assigned to serve
The little pizzas. There's a kid,
Who's clearly queer, proclaiming
He's a date for prom, and, knotted
By the chips and dip, the patriarchs
Are talking hunting, talking hatred,
Hoping that the centuries of being
Best can be continued. God has
Said they ought to be, as he is
White, as we all know, and, anyway,
When all are equal, women, even
Queers and niggers, might prove
Better at one's job, and that which is
And ought to be will fail, almost
As if the timers and the sprinklers
I am watching ceased to work, and
All the lovely lawns, exposed to nature,
Became choked with weeds and brown.
