Legacies

They gave us what they wanted for themselves,
Like parents, and, like children, we've let their
Gifts rot away. They said we were the
Government. We groaned. We didn't want
The job, and passed it off to others, who we
Never cared to get to know. We keep them
In their offices, but hate them and complain.
They said that we could know the truth,
But we were busy. Truth is dull, and, anyway,
We've learned enough from TV shows and
Trips to church. We prefer to be amused,
And didn't notice, didn't care, as truth became
Obscured. They told us we should worry.
One day, we might find ourselves accused,
And, so, they gave us certain rights, but,
Being worried more that those who we
Accuse will get away, we've given up
Most of those rights. Now, blind
Obedience, and fear, and ignorance
Will be the gifts that we leave to our
Children. They are what, it seems,
We've wanted for ourselves.
