Rover?

This canine dogs my footsteps,
As I guess it should, on my way
From the bus stop, done with
Work, to home. It's almost
Human in the way it follows,
Feigning lack of interest.
“I'm just bound for where
You're going. I don't need
To be with you.” I reach
My building's door, and
Pause to find my key.
I turn to pet my new
Companion, but it's stopped
Beyond my reach and looks
Away. I go inside, and, once
Upstairs, look down. The dog
Sits on the sidewalk, sadly?
Somehow almost human,
Waiting for another, other
Footsteps it can dog.
