Lover Available, No Wading
“Are you insular?,” she asks.Reconnaissance; the time is right.
The music's loud. No one can
Hear, and she, who's circled
Wrongly, watching me, who's
Also circled her (and wrongly),
Probes. She wants to know
If I am worth what she could
Lose, and I think back. What
Should I say? Recalling friends
And lovers lost, roots pulled
Up and gone to rot, and turning
Blithely, truth be known, to
Walk away to start again without
Regrets; perhaps I am. I look at
Her, and lust, but say, “I ache for you.
I cannot lie, but I am like Mont
Saint Michel. Come love me now.
The causeway's clear, yet know
That, soon, the tide will rise, and I
Will be beyond your reach,
An island, yes, no longer yours,
And you'll discover from the shore
That what you wagered when you
Made the journey out to lay with me
Was lost. I know I want you now.
I have my doubts that I'll want you
Long, and, one day, should you search
For me, you'll find I'm far away.”
