The walk home pt.4-2

Still I heard the rage, the insanity, drip forth from those frothy lips far behind me. They never ceased to unnerve me. The street lights beside me felt benevolent, judging. And the myriad of faceless buildings beside them, none of which had doors, were cobblestones for this path of madness.

Then the lights went out.

I stopped, unable to see even a foot infront of me. No stars glowed from the sky. No moon bathed me in comfort. Even the madman far behind had fallen silent. I waited. My mouth dry and parched from fear. I heard it then. Sudden and steady. A long breathing sound, high above, in and out it went. Turning my eyes toward the sky I spied a large, softly glowing blue orb moving steadily across, from left to right. Far above the buildings it towered. I was lost in this moment and all I could do was follow the orb as it moved.

A sharp flash of lightning brought me back to my senses and almost stopped my heart. My ears near bled at the loud cackling thunder that followed. Worst of all, my mind nearly broke as the lightning revealed more of the orb above. In that instant, I saw a creature I can only describe as similar to a monstrous jellyfish. Its body and tendrils reflecting the lightning, bringing to mind some monster that creeps around in the pitch black of the deep sea.

As it reached the center of my path forks of lightning sparked outwards from its body and the creature sounded a long, keening wail. I fell to my knees. The breathing sound was cacophonous now above me and a faint thrum joined in the noise.

I had my hands over my ears and although I dearly wish to look away I could not. My neck ached, my body vibrated as the creature passed. It seemed forever until the noise grew faint and the strange being disappeared past the buildings into whatever destination it sought.

The lights turned on.

All was silent again. At this point, I wept.
