Less Than Heartbroken
I should have showered the womanWith gifts. That's what the other
Old rascals do, should have taken
Her out on the town every night
To have wine and polenta, and
Foie gras or sushi to prove my
Affection for trendy food.
I should have said, “Babe, you're
So fetchingly clever,” but, really,
She wasn't. She nattered and whined,
And seemed to know nothing,
So, when she said, “Freddie, I'm bored
And I'm leaving,” it wasn't as if
She was breaking my heart. I felt
As if someone was taking a painting,
A thing of some beauty, but
Largely unneeded, and, since
I'd not squandered a fortune
On gifts, I was all right with
What I had lost.
