Epilogue
The story's epilogue is dull.The sky's a blankly hazy smear.
There are no shadows underneath
The leafless trees and yellowed shrubs.
Inside his house, the hero reads.
It seems as if the outer world
Tumbled further into hell as he
Had been on his adventure.
He can stop it. He won't read.
Instead, he stares as something
Large, a bird, unknowing, freighted
With the story's elements,
The woman and his love for her,
Retreats into the chalky sky.
He turns to ponder his defeat.
That was how the story ended;
In its aftermath, the calm
Which comes from resignation,
And is dull.
