Nostalgia
Have things been lost? It's hard to say.An aging mind perceives a world aging,
Even if it's not. Are the lives we thought
We led, the rotogravure images of health
And happiness and plenty, golden turkeys,
Well-scrubbed faces, hearty faiths, and
Good intentions, gone, or were they never
There? The ones who freely spoke up
Even then were being photographed,
The bodies dangled under limbs.
The phones were tapped. The wars
Went on. At tables out of sight from
Ours, despairing faces, empty plates,
And, even in our sunlit homes,
The turkeys sometimes came out dry,
And moms were scorned, and fathers
Left, or stayed to cuff around the kids.
Such losses do not seem so sad,
And, willful in forgetfulness, the
Aging mind, now looking backward,
Wishes only, as it always has, that
Things could change.
