Devil or Deep Blue Sea
Which way to fail would hurt the less,To linger, loving, but unloved, or
Bolt and leave a fragile woman,
One who's meant no harm to me,
To face her dismal life alone?
Which of us should the martyr be?
I fear I ought to be the one, as
She is young and not so strong,
The standard daughter Cinderella,
Facing motherly disdain without
A pair of slippers near to wear
To win a nobleman. Someone
Must reach her where's she's hidden,
Mouse or rat, a man, like me,
Who squeezes through the little
Spaces to her side to hear her
Speak, a rodent, who has failed
At love, and pays for his audacity.
This aged creature, so mistaken,
Must the martyr be.
