A Picture in the Hallway
The captain had some money when he was my age.His wife had died in childbirth. He'd come home from
His years at sea, and hired a young woman from
A farm nearby to keep his house. He found her
Fetching, fell in love, and asked her for her hand
In marriage. Her folks had no use for her, and said
She ought to take his offer. They were married.
Here's the picture: some old, wild, bearded guy
Within a shapeless, rumpled suit, beside his pretty
Little thing. She doesn't smile, but holds his hand.
She was his wife until he died, and always said that
She had loved him. Why do I tell this to you?
Because I'm wild and old and bearded. You are
Young, and, if I had some money, and if I no
Longer had a wife, I ask you now to marry me,
And I suspect you would.
