Crusoe and the Mermaid
Eleven months of tossing waves have leftMe shipwrecked, standing here. Eleven
Months of “they can't see you,” “I won't
Tell you what I want. I'll only say that
You should stay,” and now it's she who
Hasn't stayed, and I am on this empty beach.
I write her name once in the sand, and
Tell myself she said that she'd be back.
Then she might rescue me, but I suspect
That, if she comes, I won't be saved.
Instead, she'll send me out again
To flounder in the sea.
