Vantage, Washington

I come to Vantage on a mission:
Heal my broken heart. I've been
Here many times before to see
The huge Columbia, to face a
Landscape like the moon's,
Devoid of any vegetation,
Rocky, basalt cliffs, how many
Hundred feet above the water?
I, afraid, look over them. I dream
Of jumping. Now's the time.
I'm certain that my heart is healed,
And, like some sort of desert
Lizard, clamber over rocks
To reach my car and go to
Ellensburg to take a room,
And place within an empty
Motel restaurant. I tell
The waitress I'll have fish, and,
Though I know my heart's
Repaired, I look back at what
I have seen and tell myself,
“She would have liked it here.”
