Even a Sycophant Should Get a Candy

I know that, if I got to see her,
I would fall in love again. I know
That, as the weeks have passed,
She hasn't had the time to change,
And, thus, I'd see the sorrow in
Her smile, and I'd detect the
Evasions in her rote complaints.
I'd see the need, it wasn't love,
For me to be nearby, a fool
Adoring someone who had
Waited all her life to be adored,
And I, as then, would come,
And then be turned away,
And wish for more. I can't
Know what she feels these
Days, but I, defeated, am
Relieved. She's gone. She
Can find someone else, and
I, with luck, also will find
Someone, this time, who
Hasn't been so damaged that
She doesn't understand that
She should offer recompense
To any wretch who grovels,
Saying she's adored.
