For Ariel

Double Billed

I should charge you, honey.
Freak shows aren't things
You can see for free, and
We both see the freak. He's
Drunk and underneath
Your window, bawling
That you are his love, when
All you'd planned to do was
Have him come to share some
Tea and go. You're very young,
And he's insane. You'd rather
Not have anyone you know
Discover that he's there,
And you can't even tell
Yourself why you, transgressed,
Say he can stay, but you do,
And he does, upending flower
Pots and settled ways.
Your boyfriend hasn't seen
Him there. Your mother's
Not aware the man's a
Freak; she thinks that he's
Okay. The world spins
All wrong. You want him
Near. You wish he'd walk
Away, and now, though he
Says he should charge you,
You know how much you've
Already paid.
