Offspring of an Era of Diminished Expectations
She's the same age as my kids,And shares their sober view of life.
They've learned there's nothing
Gained from dreaming. Plan
To pull yourself ahead, and
Know that you may not succeed.
Be satisfied with what you have.
It may be all you'll ever get.
This seems the way she views
Our love. It's here, but cannot
Come to much because of certain
Obligations. She must have me
Close at hand, but will not ever
Say she loves me, will not dare
To wish for meals by candlelight
And nights in bed. The little that
We have is good. It wasn't
Something she had planned.
It came to be because I'm
Older, of a generation who
Allow themselves to dream.
