I haven’t written anything for awhile. Today, after watching these two big blackbirds flying across the sky, with their large wingspan, I contemplated upon them and why I was captivated by them. This little poem came from that event.

Psalm of the Blackbird

Blackbird sailing through the sky
Soaring, swooping, catching my eye
Flying high o’er the trees
Lilting, swaying, mesmerizing me

Tell me about the world below
What you’re seeing, where will you go
Tell me about the sky above
Why the clouds are grey
And block the warmth of love

Blackbird with your wings spread wide
Tell me how you trust the wind to glide
How you know, when you cannot see,
That all your needs are freely given thee

And blackbird is it true that you are fed
Each day are given your daily bread?
For I am wondering why it is so
That in your flight, no worries you show

While I am here on this ground
Watching you without a sound
Teaching me a lesson in belief
Regarding faith, giving my soul relief

And how The Christ was sacrificed upon a tree
To pay the price to set me free

So blackbird, the Truth I know
The Way, The Life is my faith, my hope
And under His wings I will glide
The Son of Man, in His light, I will abide

Beautiful, as always, Kathy. Your poem reminds me of Shelley's "To a Skylark" in a nostalgic way. And welcome back to the Bay! We would love to read more of your works. :)

Hi Kathy. I like this, and these two lines say so much:

"Blackbird with your wings spread wide
Tell me how you trust the wind to glide"

I keep coming back to them. Trust & knowledge—what do we know? What do we take on faith?

My favourite part: the last three lines of the first stanza. They have the natural eloquence and fluency of a song:

Tell me about the sky above
Why the clouds are grey
And block the warmth of love

The rhyme, too, is very satisfying here because of the slight "grey delay"!

Thank you for posting. It's so good to "see" you!
