Within a Yellow New Moon

As far as one can go
into a yellow new moon,
I thought, I will go.
With that thought,
I stepped onto the moving staircase
of a shopping mall.
From the second floor to the third,
from the third to the fourth.
At the food court, I bought
fried chicken legs at the KFC counter
and began to chew.
Then, coffee from Subway.
But amid all this,
where was the yellow,
where was the new moon?
The smart salesgirl at Shoppers Stop
held up a maroon pre-stitched dhoti
and said, “This is the new fashion
for this year’s Puja.
Take it, sir. It will look good on you.”
A whole cascade of green waves,
radiating from the bright, dancing eyes
of the daughter of commerce,
dressed me anew.
I saw that an exchange of thoughts
had begun between my soul
and Newton’s First Law.
And, stamping its feet
before the mystical star fruit,
my heart was giving voice
to its wounded pride.
