The City of Toronto where I live can easily be considered Canada's most multi-cultural and cosmopolitan city. Toronto also encourages its many diverse cultures to freely indulge in their individual cultural and religious practices. This poem is about h

JUST ME

You look at me with an angry stare
And you pretend I'm not there, I am
Not your complexion, so you
Can't see any human connection.

The book of religious laws clasped in your hand,
Tells of brotherly love and sharing the land,
You kneel and pray for health, prosperity and
Freedom, but only for people of your own nationality.

So I ask, what's this thing you have about hating
And not relating, segregating and not participating?
Don't wait for Heaven for us to be together as one,
Right here and now is where the job should be done.

Come on shake my hand, embrace me, kiss me, see me
For what I am, not what You think I ought to be. Is it
Because I am Black, I am Brown, I am Yellow, I am White?
Hey friend most of all, I AM ME, a creation of my God
And your God. A special piece of humanity.

Individuality
aye, there is much too much hate and anger disguised under the blanket of religious ideals. too many speaking of the life hereafter and not enough living inside today's smile. a good poem.
