Spells Blood and Broken Promises

Everything was red, hot and burning. My face, my arms, my stomach, my legs and everything in between. I shot up out of bed and breathed in and out hard. What was happening to me? I pushed my white, long sleeved, sleeves up and tied my waist-length hair back, with the hair-tie on my wrist.

I ran down stairs, once again I was as thirsty as anything, and needed water and ice. Maybe another ice bath. I swung open the fridge and someone caught my wrist. I looked up to see my older sister, Misty, her crystal-blue eyes full of concern.

"Evyla, this is wrong, we need to get you to a hospital!" I opened my mouth to say something but got cut off.

"We can't! We can't! It's happening to her now! No hospitals can help her!" a deep, frantic voice came from behind Misty. It was Sage, my older brother.

Misty turned, her waist-length plait nearly whipping me in the face.

"Then what can we do!? What can we do?" She shouted, tightening her grip on my wrist.

Sage wiped his hands on his trackies and ran his fingers through his thick, sweaty black curls.

"Nothing, this shouldn't be happening now, she's too young! She's not controlled! I don't know, I just don't know!"

"Well that's helpful!" Misty snapped.

Sage exploded.

"Misty please, I'm trying! I'm looking in every damn book there is about wi-"

"GUYS!" I screamed over the shouting. My brother and sister both stopped and turned to me, their faces both pale.

"I'm burning!" I shouted, tears streaming down my face.

Sage forgot the argument, dropped to the ground and cradled me in his arms, his cool skin felt nice against my burning skin. Sage flinched, and touched my cheek.

"You're burning," he said painfully.

The only response I gave was a little whimper.

Sage snapped his head up to Misty.

"You, go find out something, look in my room, look through all them books, there has to be something! There has to be cases like this, go."

Misty gave me one last look before disappearing upstairs.
Her eyes were haunted, I could tell she was on the edge of losing it, she didn't know what to do for me, it made my heart ache, to see her in such pain all for me.

Sage uncomfortably and reluctantly shifted me from his lap, I moved around and was about to say something, but stopped when I saw his chest. His chest –on which I'd been sobbing on, was flustered and I was shocked to see some of the skin burnt.

I jumped up gasping; I slammed a hand over my mouth so fast it hurt.

"Did I..I do that?" I stuttered.

Sage winced as he touched his chest, he looked up swallowing.

"Evyla, your tears burn like acid,"

My eyes widen, acid? My tears burned like acid? I stepped away from Sage in complete horror; I hurt someone, not just someone –my brother! With these cursed uncontrollable powers! Sage slowly got up, grimacing each step he took towards me, he held his hands out, in what seemed to be a calm-down-gesture.

"Evyla, Evyla, it's OK, I'm fine,"

I shook my head violently and turned away from Sage, running into the bathroom. I locked the door, and ran the tap, splashing bucketfuls of icy cold water on my face. Nothing! Nothing! I didn't even flinch from the coldness! Because I didn't feel it, I only felt the texture of the water. Unbelievable.

I looked at myself in length-view mirror, my skin was flustered pink,my hands were glowing a weird red, my jet black hair was drenched in sweat and my eyes looked a stunning black. I shook my head, I was feeling light-headed. Black eyes? No my eyes were Emerald...normally.

A loud banging coming from the other side of the bathroom door made me jump, I held onto the towels rack to keep my balance.

"Evyla! Open up this door, now!"

It was Sage, shouting. I leaned forward on the towels rack and breathed in and out, then finally answered.

"No." I said breathlessly.

"Why?" Sage demanded.

"Because I might hur-"

I cut off and screamed, as one of the towel's I was leaning on burst into flames.

"Evyla!" Sage boomed, busting the door open, his jaw dropped to the floor.
"Get out of here," he yelled, pushing me out the door and into the hallway.

I was stubborn, and hardly moved, I watched frozen in the hallway as Sage threw the towel on the floor, stomping on it loudly. Sage glared at me, when the flames were out.

"I told you to mov- Evyla!"

I followed Sage's pained gaze to my feet, I was burning the hallway's carpet -with my bare feet. I jumped back, the flames followed me, I backed up into the wall shocked, my hands flying out against it...and setting it a light.

Sage and I watched in horror as the wall burnt, collapsing down, blocking the other half of hallway, blocking the other half of the house, that means blocking –

"Guys! I found something! Here look! Look! Page thre-"

Blocking Misty's way out.

Misty stood in confusion for a minute, then her eyes widen, as she saw Sage and I frozen on the other side of the burning collapsed wall.

"Evyla! Sage!" She screamed, running towards the flames she came to a startling halt as a flame leapt out at her, whipping her left cheek, burning a nice piece of flesh off. Misty howled in pain.

I lunged towards the roaring flames, about to stupidly try and jump over them to get to Misty, but just as I was about to, a piece of the ceiling started to fall, I felt strong hands pull me back.

I shouted at Sage for pulling me back, then spun around and watched stunned, in what looked like slow motion, as the piece of ceiling fell down and down, about to cover Misty's way to Sage and I out completely.

I frantically looked over Misty's shoulders to see if she could escape in one of the bed-rooms windows or something, but unfortunately, to my great surprise the fire had spread completely around her, making her trapped. No way out.

No, oh no. This couldn't happen. Misty's face was pained; she looked at her right hand, in which she held a black, thick old looking book.
Tears started to stream down Misty's face as she gently threw the book to me, instinctively I caught it, luckily not getting burnt, but unfortunately some of the pages did. Misty looked from me to Sage, she knelt down defeated and blew us one last kiss.

"Goodbye Evyla, hold onto that book, it will help you. Sage, look after our little sister, I will always love you both, go get out of here! Live for me! Promise! Mom and I will be watching over you, always as proud as can be... "

"I promise," Sage and I whispered feeling entranced and not really processing anything. Reality slammed back into my face and I knew Misty just said her last goodbyes. If fire didn't bring the house down, my screams would, if the fire didn't go out with water, then my tears would.

I wanted to run in them flames, to save Misty! It couldn't be too late; my heart told me it was impossible and to let go, my mind said there was a chance and to die to fight for it. But my heart argued and said that I had made a promise to Misty, to live for her. Heart won.

"We have to get out of here," Sage croaked, choking on all the smoke and his own tears.

I shook my head violently, and crouched half way down in distress and frustration.

"We can't Sage! Misty! Misty is in there!"

"She's gone Evyla," Sage said gently. "And if we don't leave now, we will be too, look the flames are already spreading behind us, and we will be trapped helplessly as well."

It took all my willpower and the last of my strength to get out that house, but Sage held my hand and went through it all with me, we crawled, we got burnt, we got scratched, we choked and none of us complained.

Our main focus; to get the hell out. Our lives were the only thing that mattered in this time. Misty and our grief for her will still be waiting when we get out.

Numerous times I wanted to just lay there on the floor where I collapsed for the hundredth time from exhaustion, and let the flames get me, to let me be with my sister. Sage was the only one who kept me going -that and Misty's promise.

After an excruciating fifteen minutes of crawling and choking, Sage and I were out. And we were safe. I heard sirens from near distance and I felt instantly relieved. Stunned and horrified! But relieved.

Shocked Neighbors rushed out from their houses, pulling us far away from the house. A few blankets were suddenly around Sage's shoulders and mine. The neighbors started asking silly questions like "How did the fire start?" and "Do you have insurance?" Sage murmured a couple responses but none of us were ready to talk.

A sudden loud bang -an explosion made me cringe, the house blew up. Chunks of the roof flew off, all the walls turned to ash, and slowly made their way to the ground; everything in that house I have ever known or loved was gone. Including Misty. My amazing, big sister.

I held the big black book up to my chest, and as I did so I noticed something shocking. My hands. Yes, they were burnt but that is not what caught my attention, they were covered in twisted red flame-like tattoos, they glowed, like they did in the bathroom before.

I turned to Sage in desperation.

"Why me Sage? Why me? I didn't ask for any of this,"

Sage slowly turned to me; he shook his head sadly, as he held my hands.

"None of us do, but when cruel fate turns on us, we do not hide and run away, we embrace it with confidence, you found out your element tonight Evyla, it is Fire. This is just a mere example of what you're cable of, treat and use your element well,"

"I'm a monster!" I sobbed into Sage's chest, not really taking anything in.

Sage shook his head and held me tight.

"You're not a monster; you're just a witch, who hasn't leaned to control her element yet."

I promised to live for Misty; I will not break my promise, but I'm silently adding another promise to her. From this day forward, I will never, ever, use my element again –in control or not.
