the words often come out easily
when i''m writing and alone
flowing with a pattern that''s POETRY
resonant, with a pleasing tone

i am waiting all this while
for the muse to join with me
then i can write with a smile
the right words always make me happy

i''m seeking a certain frame of mind
where words have colors that match
not in me, but through me i find
the elusive key to open the latch

the gate is ancient, yet seems always new
the garden beyond is my prize
i enter with awe, i always do
with wonder and glad surprise

still waiting alone for my familiar the muse
to channel a power that isn''t mine
to instruct, or interpret, or even amuse
in me, life and love entertwine

but words won''t come to the mind that''s blind
open the eyes that peer within
the song is struck dumb from one who is unkind
raise your voice to join in harmony again

"Not in me but through me" resonates with me; I believe that's exactly how it works, especially for someone who primarily writes nature poems as I do. You've described how to approach a poem: "enter with awe".

I like it. Welcome to "The Bay".

This brings to mind a carousel, a merry-go-round, with it's light melody and circular theme—composing to the muse while waiting for the muse.
