Very sorry to hear that the police were tactless and brusque, and of a distressing appearance and demeanour. I think that the police (in any place) often forget that they are supposed to be serving the public, to save their bravado and machismo for situations that warrant such things. And yes, sometimes a friend's sincerest concern can also be ten-thumbed and clumsy.
