Journal entry at 02 October 2022

to be or not to be

Written 2022-10-03

Three years have now passed, well almost, we are just at the beginning of the month here in October 2022, when the new Emperor was installed. But a new king has come to the throne in England, the Queen having passed away.

Ms K is starting her first week of the last term of this school year. All around us people are busy and overly focused on normalising their lives after the last couple of years of restrictions and lockdowns. It feels like everyone is voluntarily pulling the wool down over their heads, having had enough of the ceaseless pounding in hopes and dreams.

Perhaps a return to this journal at another day this month would result in a more upbeat tone and mindset. For now, it's too early to even bother to get up when Autumn has not fully decided to be or not to be.

between states

Written 2022-09-30

The state one finds themselves in, say at the end of a month and at the beginning of a new one is much like that transitory state between the weekend and that first hour of the incoming work week.

Las night was meant to be journalled and somehow well thought out. But is it turns out, things have changed and the nightly routine was waylaid by unforeseen circumstances involving getting out of the house more than the usual for a Friday night and a midnight meal which hardly ever is the case.

So here it is, the last day of September, if we move along with another time zone that still bears that time stamp. And clicking away at the dawn hours in the dark. Welcome October, welcome Autumn. Welcome that limbo of the colder months. And work toward that self directing that only the blossoming of Spring brings.

the year is 2022

last week of September

Written 2022-09-26

it takes a little bit of getting used to
and finally learn and admit that in
this set of life circumstances there
will be so much more reading done
than there is for one to be read.

September 15, 2022

Written 2022-09-15

Today is Mum's 83rd birthday and most of my thoughts drifted toward my father, her late estranged husband, who had gone on ahead of us earlier this year. It was with great thanksgiving that I look back at these two important personages in my journey of life. The passing of our monarch and the accession of the new is also a current that runs in the background. We await my mother in law's full body scans as they have found cancerous tumors in her thyroid gland. Much of our days since the lockdowns have been a waiting game. And here we are again.

September 2022

Written 2022-09-14

The borders may be fully open soon thus offering unlimited travel. That reading and writing would ring true of such liberty shall likewise be a pleasant possibility that is much looked forward to. The changing of the guard is also another aspect that would play out in the immediate succeeding years. And while there is much left of this year, 2022, perhaps its achievement and contours have already been pretty much set.

Goodbye 2021

before the year ends

Written 2021-11-24

Traversing over the many varied moons and calendars,
tasting the challenges over many many miles of verse;
both in sharing and receiving, lines feeding an ever emptying purse:
may these blossoms fruit among the vines from which they sprout.
Perhaps the next fiscal year shall fare somewhat differently in comparison.

countdowns

Written 2020-07-15

Today presented a thought about how life is a series of countdowns.

One of the most prominent countdowns happens on December 31st. Peals of "auld lang syne" fill the air on completion; entering both ear and sentiment.

At this junction, is another countdown, a more personal one. Sure, it could be counting toward that fateful moment when COVID-19 finally gets you. It also could be counting toward the end of this paid subscription, shy of three months when the decision has to be made whether or not to continue here at poetbay or anywhere else.

And as for countdowns. We keep counting them, we keep on finding new ones to count. And at the end of the next three months, we shall see. And begin again.

In the wake of international protests, natural calamities, personal tragedies and socio-political unrest we navigate our days.

23 October, 2019

Written 2019-10-23

Writing is probably not the most advisable thing at the moment, when all that is inside is an upheaval and all that is without is in an uproar. Perhaps, tomorrow is a much better day to sit at the desk. Yet, as if by an unseen force, these fingers are 'etching' away, like miners' picks at some forgotten quarry. Who knows what creation will result?

A new emperor has been 'crowned' in these islands of the rising sun. Not that one could really call that fancy headdress, a crown. It was a coronation I was only able to partially witness, other things having come to the fore. Typhoon No. 20 was lashing away as we travelled south of the capital city. We were also introduced for the first time to the Japanese mores of cremation and funerary traditions. It didn't help that the ceremony was for a 2-hour old infant, complete and ready to go at just under 22 weeks, her lungs not yet fully able to work with the air that we often forget that we breathe.

The hushed conversation, not quite whispers, were very sombre in its quietness. Who knows what would have really been going on in the respective mind of each thinker and what feelings were bursting or trickling within each congregant.

Ms K still looked young but also so much more mature. No why's or questions, just being companionable and respectful. Underneath all the veneer, who knows, really.
We have fashioned ourselves after emulation and our pining after some imagined future. It makes one wonder if we were to keep more silent than we are wont, what would society be like?

downtown downtime

Written 2019-09-16

Monday, 16 September 2019

Fighting of the flu has been a late summer past time and a late winter chore. We had gotten on well enough the whole of this summer season. But things are taking a downhill turn. It doesn't help that feeling unwell also brings on a very lousy mood. So Ms K has been quite out of it and not very responsive to any coaxing.

Today is Grandparents Day in Japan. There was hardly anyone on the road. The trains were wonderfully "empty." But it was still hectic by South East Queensland railway and metro standards. You can't win it all. The long white cloud has also settled over the archipelago.

Added to this was the fine misty rain that was more like light rain but with the consistency of a drizzle. It calls to mind a leaking tap with very high pressure pushing against the stopper. And so it rained the entire day.

It was otherwise an okay outing to the Tokyo central train station, a grand 19th century edifice with modern interior fittings. The crowd of shoppers and holiday makers was dizzying. Also, as we have observed over the last year and a half, there would be 4 foreign tourists or so out of every 10 persons that you meet. It was thrilling and all but only momentarily. Ms K did all her souvenir hunting, basically badges, pins, and key chains. After which we found this wonderful little spot to grab a bite to eat– great price, decent flavour and generous service sizes. One could not ask for more.

see you in September

14 September 2019

Written 2019-09-14

Ms K wasn't feeling well today. It must be the change in the weather. All of a sudden the punishing heat of this humid summer has given way to much cooler weather. There is also that sudden release from now completed term end assessments and scholastic requirements. Perhaps it also rounds off the picture that Ms K has been enrolled at two schools at the same time. So much pressure.

Now that summer has officially ended, it's time for a minute break. At least from distance education which will start up again in a fortnight. It being the end of the summer holidays, there is also the matter of mother's birthday. Tomorrow she turns 80. Could hardly believe it! She has always been 34 in my head. Time has gone it way, both merrily or otherwise. With my brother turning 40 yesterday, it has certainly been an eventful September, however banal these days may have been.

The years have been both cloudy and swift. And each time September comes along, there is to be found again, the root and branch of my thought and emotional beginnings. Some 12 years ago, Ms K became a part of the fabric of this life. Hope she feels much better in the morning. And while some people have Paris, we shall most decidedly have September.
