Upon the death of the one within. . .

Sonnet 104 The Child Within Me

See, Mother looking down, the gift you gave
to grow in me what you had sown in you,
a life like yours in me, as strong and brave
to bear the anguish yielding birth anew.

You taught me how to hold my friendships, dear;
be cautious not to act nor let a hand
rise up against my love, not anger, fear
nor fall beneath a cruel, unjust demand.

I wait alone, weak heart and panting breath,
a fetal soul within awaiting light
though Fate may deem for us an early death
your Faith in me still strong and burning bright.

The moment came: some "god's" demanding will –
the child lies within me lifeless, still.
