on this lonesome trail

i passed a stranger on the road today
he gave me a glass of water and a bit of bread
and asked me where i was headed to
i told him, "i don't know much sir,
i just know that i'm headed in the direction
that the roads a takin' me"

i passed a stranger on the road today
he gave me a glass of water and a bit of bread
we had a short conversation before i headed on my way again
it was nice, being able to connect with another person again
it's been so long on this lonesome trail

i passed a stranger on the road today
he gave me a glass of water and a bit of bread
the journey has been such a long one
i'm a comin' home, father, i'm a comin' home
