gallow's bite

gallow's bite

stifled witness
sits transfixed
in the gallery
of court

testimony unheard
pleas unwanted
constraint
-- unaccepted

fury grows in her breast
knows full well
defendants in the dock
-- guilty

cowardly
unrepentant
wanton
and cruel

judge wears
a blindfold
his ears plugged
with indifference

plaintiff
incredulous
stirs -- twitches
in -- seat of wronged

jury looks the other
-- way
refuses to hear
the truth

guilty go free
stifled witness is
led to the
gallows.

Kathy Lockhart
Powerful account poetically portrayed. Those court rooms aren't always justice bound.
