THE BURIAL DETAIL! (World War One)

Just got back from burial detail
a load of our dead - forty five in all
not all are in one piece - just the body trunks - wrapped up in a blanket
arm issue - the family will be billed fore the cost of blanket
a card with their names attached
heads - cut off - or just a mash - of what had once been heads
arms - legs - blown off
boots removed - returned to store - pockets emptied - contents to be sent back to kin
Some keep sakes - of some poor mothers son - keep sakes - fore some ones wife
letters stained husbands - farther , blood , momentous - of their men folks death to remind them of who and what they had lost
On some letters - stained we're blood and mud - keep sakes
Padre - chaplain - reads from the bible - says a pray - we stoop down - pick up some dirt - drop it down to our - mates - pals - chums - laying in the grave some heads- lay on the side the side wall of the grave - as like on a pillow - resting sleeping - the sleep of death
an issue of rum - that don't take away the taste - nor - dulls the mind

Not long after - Friz - sends over shells - returning the dead - more shells - rebury the dead - till soon now remains - that were once were mens remains
happens a dozen times - just war - it's what wars battles is!
