lyric from 'night in the city'

joni mitchell

night in the city

i've always loved these lyrics by joni mitchell

Take off take off
Take off your stay-at-home shoes
Break off shake off
Chase off those stay-at-home blues
Stairway stairway
Down to the crowds in the street

i imagined an outside stairway

leading from a second floor apartment

in a sad house   to an empty city street

i imagined a rainy night

a lone streetlight

glistening   black   pavement

nothing original   just thoughts to accompany

the lyrics   romantic   lonely   never meant to shake off the blues

in time i met annie   she lived in just such a place

we walked up a flight of sodden wooden stairs

to her room   night in the city   while it rained

when i walked down

for the last time   it was just as i imagined

I am not familiar with the song but I get the feeling. Bright lights and big cities can either break or educate. Interesting thoughts and an interesting piece.

All is palpable in this fine piece of writing.
Story, a moment ... and jam packed with atmosphere.
