Tankas for Tomorrow

Walking through this lane

Covered with yellow fig leaves,

Lost in sparrow’s songs,

The hush of our jaded hearts

Hum a tune of faded love.

It is Saturday—

We're awakened too early

By the din of rain

And hail before morning breaks;

The birdsong now soothes our souls.

The fences, the walls—

They all protect the orchard

From evils unknown;

Our homes are protected by

Cacti and bougainvilleas.

Friend or foe, I ask

You to come inside for tea—

Want milk or lemon?—

We'll go for a walk later,

And lose ourselves in nature.

The tea in our cups

Slowly cools in gradual

Why do our bodies still weigh

The resentment of coldness?

The coldness of tea

Freezes our damp and dank souls;

What warmth will we find

In poetry when our souls

Are ice-covered and brittle?

Happiness? Sadness?

Who knows for sure what they are?

Though love has grown cold,

The sparrows won't stop singing,

The fig leaves won't stop falling.

Subtle and expressive beauty in (these) words and lines...! Fair to say you have already surpassed yourself, in my opinion. Well done!

A very nice exploration of a deceivingly complicated form.

There's a sureness to the diction of these poems, a lyric ingenuity and a perspicacity of vision that is uniquely yours. An accomplishment! Bravo.
