Granted, this is a minority view!

When Bold October ...

When bold October, with his leaves ablaze,

Instructs us in the limits of our days

And brash north winds kick up the trodden dust,

Mortality broadcast by every gust,

When eyes adapt themselves to shrinking light

And golden suns go pale at autumn's blight,

I marinate my flesh in the deep chill

And my heat-weary heart begins to thrill.

When cold November with its early dusk

Sharpens the air, dispelling warm days' musk,

And gatherings of kin and kith and friend

Announce another year's about to end,

When rustling of spent foliage stirs your ears

And icy gales can sting your eyes with tears,

Then I forget, for now, my daily worries

And sing hosanna for the frost and flurries!
