Improvised Litany

Thanks be to God
for coffee without cream,
for coffee cooled
by a single cube of ice.

Thanks be to God
for my unlimber body,
fifty on its last birthday,
slower than a cheetah,
less fierce than a tiger.

Thanks be to God
for letting us know
that Nature ("great Nature"
in poet Roethke's phrase)
is the bravest poem.

Thanks be to God
for the kumquat, for the kiwi,
for qiviut, for the corncrake,
thanks be to God
for the ice-cream-beaked platypus,
for the bristle-bellied grizzly bear.

Thanks be to God
who inspired spring
in every holt and heath.

Thanks be to God
who hath found a mate for the sparrow,
sold two for a farthing.

Thanks be to God
that the world is there,
and there are many fine,
many strange,
many delightful things
about it.
