Requiem for Joe Flynn

That time Mom said:
"Guess who's dead? Joe Flynn!"

and I had no bloody idea
who Joe Flynn was
so I asked "who's Joe Flynn?"

Exasperated by my playing dumb
(the whole world knows

who Joe Flynn was)
Mom answered, "Don't be

a stupid shithead. JOE FLYNN!"

"Sorry, Mom, I might be

a stupid shithead, but louder's

not helping. Who's Joe Flynn?"

"The guy who played the father
in Everybody Loves Raymond!"

"Oh, yeah, him!" I said, as if
light had dawned at last:
"but wasn't that Peter Boyle?"

Mom cheerfully shrugged.

"Peter Boyle, Joe Flynn ---
a rose by any other name...."

I haven't read a "funny" requiem like this before. I like the exchanges that go between the mother and the son.
