Others have expressed, are expressing, and will express, these sentiments much better and much more powerfully than I can. But I hope that this expression of solidarity, of outrage, and of hope will not be spurned.
Let the Healing Fountain Start
Compassion, treat our festering hurt:
Bind up our wounds, assuage our pains.
We rage once more against a man's
Arrested breath and murdered heart.
Suspicion speaks a callous lie;
Unreasoning fear, our chief disgrace.
Dispel all animus of race
With listening ear and seeing eye:
No brute be given badge or gun,
No lawless fiend become the law:
Our grief is scalding, anger raw,
To see injustice calmly done.
Let those who dread weapons of hate
Receive unwavering protection:
And blot from blessed recollection
All petty vengeful "heads of state."
Compassion, teach us noble ways
Where cries of those who suffer still
From prejudice and social ill
Are heard and heeded. Let us raise
The fallen to new dignity,
Redress the wrongs of right denied,
Restore oppressed souls to their pride,
And teach the proud humility.
