for a person who professes not to have faith,

who eschews illogic, i find myself attributing

deep meaning to my yellow and white

striped beach towel. upon it i am somewhere else.

it is transportive, a magic carpet, taking me

to places beyond fear and despair and loneliness.

in the park today with too many people nearby

i was transported to a white-sand beach

to sit near my friend as we talked

and watched surfers and listened to gulls.

i was transported to martha's vineyard,

to the tall grass prairie, to places i have lain

and felt free of fear and despair and loneliness.

i eschew illogic, yet i find magic in yellow and white.
