across the hall and one door down

we have been befriended   our neighbor

across the hall and one door down

has had us in for coffee   though in

is a euphemism for the park where we meet

where we can be safe   he brings coffee

in a thermos   we bring homemade cookies and fruit

he is a dear   and more dear with time

as his warm   but shy   nature emerges   his friendship

did not come easily   there were hurdles to overcome

overcome them he has   we talk freely

of who we are   how we've come to this place

in our lives   how the stasis and sameness

of our days is trying   how friendship and humor matter

how trial and faith   for him   are one

I love the hope in this poem. It opened up the windows and doors to let the fresh air in and the stale air out. My mind was alive with visions of life and love, friendship and kindness. It was a warm sunny. It was Springtime after a very dark, cold winter. Thank you.

I concur. This poem was cheering to read!

The "stasis and sameness / of our days" is indeed tiresome, but it's good to have a friend from "across the hall and one door down" to talk. Human connection matters even more during these dark times. Nicely writ, Jim. :)
