Self Determination

The vastness of this valley isn't evident
From here. From here, it seems a mile
Wide, though low bluffs on its other
Side suggest it's larger than it is. One
Half expects to see the lights of Denver
Glowing over them, but go to Valley
(Aptly named) and you will see a basin
That extends forever north and south,
And east and west, the Platte along its
Western side, the Elkhorn bordering
The east, and know, if you're at all
Like me, that here, among the fields,
Assigned to corn and soybeans,
Fallow now, you've found a lovely

“This isn't what I'd planned to write!”
“It's what it is, a finished poem,
Offspring, which, like all the others,
Came into its own, regardless of what
You had hoped it'd be.” But, surely,
I can guide a product of my mind,
Control its form, its content, so that it
Reflects what I am thinking.” “No,
You can't. You see it there. It's
Strong and handsome, in my view,
But its own thing, not yours.”

Amazing how the pen (or keyboard) takes on a life of its own! Sort of like a ouija board
